One of the most famous adventure stories of all time, starring Roy Marsden as Robinson Crusoe.
Young Robinson Crusoe has a burning ambition to be a sailor. Paying no attention to his parents’ warnings he runs away to sea to embark on an extraordinary series of adventures: struggles with Barbary pirates, a shipwreck and the extraordinary meeting with Man Friday…
Roy Marsden plays the older Robinson Crusoe looking back on a life of recklessness, daring and adventure – and the survival of twenty-eight years, two months and nineteen days on a desert island.
Based on the real-life adventures of Alexander Selkirk, son of a Scottish shoemaker, Robinson Cruse was one of the very first adventure stories to be published in English literature and it remains as gripping today as it was on publication in 1719.
English novelist, pamphleteer, and journalist Daniel Defoe is considered, along with Samuel Richardson, the founder of the English novel.
In his own days, Defoe was regarded as an unscrupulous, diabolical journalist who earned fame and royal favour with his satirical and political poetry including The True Born Englishman (1701).
Defoe was one of the first to write stories about believable characters in realistic situations using simple prose. He achieved literary immortality when in April 1719 he published Robinson Crusoe.
Among his other works are Moll Flanders, A Journal of the Plague Year and Captain Jack. His last great work of fiction, Roxana, appeared in 1724. He later became involved in writing historical works and also about the supernatural.
